Experience the charm of Sichuan on this varied tour which takes an in-depth look at the culture of the province, visits ancient towns and monuments, explores National Parks and samples the tantalizing cuisine. Starting in the colourful capital Chengdu visit the Giant Buddha at Leshan, take a street food tour in the backstreets, try Tai Chi with the locals and have a cooking class in a local restaurant. Next is the opportunity to spend a day helping out in the Giant Panda Base at Bifenxia, home to the largest number of bears in China. Finish in the north of Sichuan to explore Tibetan influenced villages and Jiuzhaigou National Park (Nine Village Valley) for mesmerising scenery of ice blue lakes and pine forests overshadowed by snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

Day 1 Chengdu
On arrival in Chengdu you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Afternoon guided tour of Chengdu: This afternoon you will set out on a city tour of Chengdu. Visit a couple of the city's famous temples and sample the tranquil atmosphere in the People's Park where you can stop to enjoy a cup of green tea in one of the tea houses there. You will also visit Narrow Alley which is an old street which dates back to the Qing Dynasty.
Accommodation: Stay 2 nights at the Buddha Zen Hotel.

 

Day 2 Chengdu - Leshan - Huanglongxi - Chengdu
After breakfast set out on a day trip to Leshan to see ¡®Da Fo', the Giant Buddha which is the largest stone-carved Buddha in the world at 71m high. A cruise on the Min River will give you a spectacular view of this majestic statue and you will have a chance to get closer to the Buddha when the boat moors. Lunch will be taken in a local restaurant nearby.
This afternoon you will be driven to the 1700 year old town of Huanglongxi in West Sichuan. Huanglongxi dates from the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280) when the town was of strategic importance to the capital of the Shu Kingdom, Chengdu. Here you will find some of western china's best preserved ancient buildings, and has a tranquil feel accentuated by a river running through the town. Wander through the narrow lanes flanked by Ming and Qing era buildings, and visit a number of interesting temples located in the centre of town.


Day 3 Chengdu - Ya'an
After a leisurely morning set off on a guided tour of Chengdu's backstreets in search of authentic Sichuanese street food. Explore the ancient street of Jinli, a restored lane located near Wuhou temple dating from the Shu Kingdom, where a number of street stalls and tea houses are found in a small area. Continue to Wenshu Monastery, an interesting site with paintings and calligraphy exhibited in its halls, located in an area where Chengdu's best street food can be found. Delicacies not to be missed are deep fried fermented tofu, mung bean cakes with chillies and sesame, pork dumplings, wonton soup and spicy pickled noodles.
Early this afternoon you will be met and transferred to Ya'an, near Bifengxia, a journey of around 2 hours.
Accommodation: Stay 1 night at the Ya'an Hotel.

 

Day 4 Bifengxia - Chengdu
This morning you will be driven to the Bifengxia Panda Base for a day's volunteering to look after the Giant Pandas. With the guidance of a researcher you will help to clean cages, collect the panda from their bamboo grove and feed the pandas. There will be plenty of time to observe the pandas and take photos. There will be the chance to hold and cuddle a baby panda and take photos (a charge is payable locally for this experience). At the end of the day you will receive a certificate for your volunteer work. Please note that if you would prefer just to visit the centre rather than volunteer this can be arranged.
This afternoon you will be driven back to Chengdu, a journey of around 2 hours.

Day 5 Chengdu
This morning there is the option of a Tai Chi class. You will be picked up early this morning and transferred to Beihuatan Park or Remin Park. The Taichi Master will give you an introduction on the theory of Taichi, and teach you some basic techniques.
Later this morning head out of town to Mount Qingcheng, one of the most famous Taoist mountains in China. The mountain is surrounded by numerous peaks and is cloaked in thick green forest which creates an enchanting atmosphere. Take a walking tour on the mountain and visit several Taoist temples where you can learn about Taoism. After lunch in a local restaurant return to Chengdu.

 

Day 6 Chengdu - Jiuzhaigou
After an early breakfast you will be transferred to the airport in time to check in for the China Eastern flight to Jiuzhaigou.
 Flight: MU5861 Chengdu - Jiuzhaigou 07.50 - 08.30

Upon arrival at Jiuzhaigou airport you will be met by your guide and driven to the Huanglong National Park, a drive of around 1 hour. Explore this valley studded with terraced coloured pool, waterfalls and mountain peaks. Lunch will be taken in a local restaurant. This afternoon explore and enjoy the wonderful landscapes some more as you seek out some wonderful vistas with your guide.
After your tour of Huanglong National Park set off by car for your hotel located near Jiuzhaigou valley, a drive of around 3 hours.

Day 7 Jiuzhaigou
After breakfast you will enjoy a day's sightseeing in this famous national park. Jiuzhaigou is a wonderfully scenic place to visit with its picturesque lakes, waterfalls, thick forests and surrounding mountains. Visit the Shuzheng and Zezawa Valleys; Pearl Sands and Shuzheng Waterfall; the Tibetan village of Shuzheng, and numerous picturesque lakes including Panda Lake, Long Lake, Rainbow Lake, Tiger Lake and Rhinoceros Lake.

 

Day 8 Jiuzhaigou - Songpan
This morning you will be transferred by road to Songpan, a journey of approximately 2 This afternoon is free to relax at your hotel, or explore the area independently.
Accommodation: Stay 2 nights at the Old House Hotel.

 

Day 9 Songpan - Mouni Valley - Songpan
This morning travel6 to Mouni Valley for a gentle half day hike passing grasslands, springs and caves. The route will take you to the impressive Zhaga Waterfall and Erdaohai Lake where you will enjoy a picnic lunch.

On this day it is also possible to arrange full day treks to explore remote Tibetan villages.

 

Day 10 Songpan - Chengdu
This morning you will be transferred to the airport in time to check in for the China Southern flight to Chengdu.
 Flight: CZ3402 Jiuzhaigou - Chengdu 14.40 - 15.30
On arrival in Chengdu you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Accommodation: Stay 1 night at the Buddha Zen Hotel

 

Day 11 Leaving Chengdu
This morning your guide and driver will transfer you to the airport for your return flight.
