The Old Burma Road links Lashio in Burma (is now called Myanmar) to Kunming in China. The Road was used to transport materials during WWII. Because of the high ridges and deep valleys, the little impact from outside, residents of the roadside still live a simple life. The scenery along the Old Burma Road is spectacular. Start from Kunming, you will drive up the Old Burma Road into the isolated parts of Yunnan and Myanmar.

Arrive at KUNMING International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon sightseeing will include a visit to Zhuang Tong Food Market and Yuan Tong Temple.

After early breakfast, transfer to the airport for the domestic flight to LIJIANG.
Upon arrival, stroll through the famous BLACK DRAGON POND PARK with the Moon Embracing Pavillion Enter through the main gate and exit north next to the museum. Visit the DONGBA CULTURAL MUSEUM which will give you an insight into the unique Naxi ethnic minority culture and their religious beliefs.
Lunch at local restaurant
In the afternoon stroll through LIJIANG'S OLD TOWN. The city was founded by the Ming Dynasty and up to today has remained a magical world of historical buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, picturesque canals and arched bridges. Unesco named Lijiang a World Heritage site in 1997.

After breakfast, drive 30 minutes to YUHU NAXI VILLAGE a charming village at the foot of the Snow Mountains. See the former residence of Dr. Joseph Rock who had devoted a good part of his life studying the Naxi culture. Continue to YUFENG MONASTERY, a small Lamasery famous for its Camelia Tree of 10.000 blossoms.
Early afternoon, travel to Snow Mountain Valley to see the open air Impression Lijiang show orchestrated by the famous Hollywood movie director Zhong Yimou and performed by more than 700 actors.
Travel to Shuhe for lunch at local restaurant.
The afternoon is devoted to the historical town of Shuhe with its lovely atmosphere of tea houses, art galleries and traditional Chinese houses. A horse cart will take you around the old town followed by time at leisure for your own explorations. If you would like to visit a further Naxi village after Shuhe your guide will be happy to take you to the area of Lashi Lake.

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive (260 km 每 6 hour) on the old road to DALI via Shaxi and Jianshuan, a market town which was once a bustling trade station on the Southern Silk Road. JIANSHUAN is home to a fascinating local market held every day of the week. Don't be blinded by the modern buildings along the main road, walk into the back alleys and discover a hidden world of historical Chinese shop houses. Continue to SHAXI, the only surviving example of a Southern Silk Road trade town which the World Monuments Fund has listed as one of the 100 most endangered sites in the world. Walk through the cobblestone alleys and see the town square, Oyang House and the splendid entrance gates of many residences. Every Friday is market day when mountain folks meet the local villagers. Lunch box will be brought along.
Continue to Dali through lush mountain sceneries with rice fields, tobacco, corn and vegetable plantations dotted with small villages and farms. Just before entering town visit the honourable age-old THREE PAGODAS, symbolizing the outstanding architectural technology, the wisdom of the ancient labouring people and the brilliant culture of Dali.
In the evening enjoy a stroll amongst the shops and old houses of Old Dali, stopping for a cup of tea in one of the old teahouses.

After breakfast, embark on an interesting drive (246 km 每 7 hour) to Baoshan and onwards on mountain roads to Tengchong through splendid landscapes ranging from tropical plantations to pine forests. Lunch at Jiulong Restaurant in Baoshan. Just before crossing the Salween river you will turn off the main road to follow the route of the ancient Southwest Silk Road, where merchants travelled since 3rd century AD. Upon arrival in TENGCHONG visit the Cemetary of the Revolutionary Martyrs giving you insight into the historical significance of the Burma Road and see the Dieshuihe Waterfall Scenic Spot and Park.

After breakfast drive 15 minutes to the south-west and visit HESHUN, a traditional walled-in historical town. Heshun looks like out of an ancient Chinese picture book and is one of the most beautiful towns remaining in today's China. Walk into town along the cobble stoned alleys up to the square where a small market is held every day. Glance through some of the entrance gates into courtyards where residents trade their goods and wares. Visit the Museum of Yunnan-Burmese Anti-Japanese War one of the most remarkable places of interest explaining the geopolitical importance of the Burma Road.

In the afternoon an overland journey (47 km 每 1 hour) takes you to YUFENG MOUNTAIN dotted with Ming and Qing Dynasty temples. Enjoy a cable car ride across lush tropical forest up the 3000 m high mountain. The 100 step climb to the very top of the peak is steep but a beautiful view and small Taoist monastery will reward you. A market takes place in different small cities in the Tengchong region on a 5-day rotation schedule which you will have the opportunity to see.

Optional : late afternoon or evening visit to Rehai Hot Springs and Spa located a 30 minute drive from Tengchong (excluded from our arrangements, payment on the spot). This truly amazing spa in natural surroundings offers bathing and relaxation in pure luxurious style with treatments such as aroma oil massage, foot massage, scrubs, cubbing, steam etc. The Spa closes at 01.00 am, a bathing suit must be worn.


After breakfast, (230 km - 5 hour) drive along magnificent sceneries and valleys full of villages and terraced rice plantations via Mangshi to RUILI. En route stop to visit the old Qing Dynasty residence in Lianghe.
Upon arrival late lunch at local restaurant in Ruili.
Early evening visit the Jewellery Street where Burmese traders deal in jade and gold. Walk to the back alleys and you will feel as if you had arrived in Burma already. See how blocks of raw jade make their way into the workshops and how they are manufactured into jewellery and ornaments.
After dinner visit the bustling night market thriving not only with sales activities but with billiard halls, gambling joints, games, restaurants and bars.

After breakfast, transfer to Jiegao, the Chinese-Myanmar border point where you will be welcomed by the Myanmar Asian Tour guide. After customs formality clearance, enter to Muse. Proceed overland (187 km 每 5 hour) to LASHIO, located at 855 meters altitude in a mountain basin.
After lunch, for the energetic, possibility to visit a typical village of the Palaung ethnic minority. Drive to the outskirts of Lashio from where continue on foot about 4 km slight up-hill (1 hour walk per way) on an unpaved path to get to the Nam Kyan village. You will have an opportunity to get an insight to the culture of the Palaung people and learn more of their life style and society.

Note : The hotel and restaurant infrastructure in Lashio is very simple and leaves much to be desired for. A stay in Lashio should be regarded as an adventure and guests should be warned before arrival.


After breakfast, stroll through the busy local market where modern gadgets as well as local produce can be found. Continue to Quan Yin San, one of the largest Chinese temples in Myanmar that bears testimony to Lashio's thriving Chinese community. A scenic drive (190 km - 6 hour) will take you to the former British hill station of PYIN OO LWIN (Maymyo), a delightful small town of colonial-style buildings, markets, and a botanical garden.
Lunch will be served in a local restaurant en-route. Upon arrival to Maymyo transfer directly your hotel.

Drive only as far as Naung Pane railway station. Wait for the Lashio-Mandalay train which was long known as the black-market train. A 45 minute train journey to Naung Cho will give you a taste of how the locals travel. You will experience the train also crawl slowly across the famous Gokteik Bridge. The 700m long bridge, built in 1900 by the American Pennsylvania Steel Co, spans across a nearly 300m deep abyss. After crossing the bridge the train will stop at a small station. You will get the chance to have a better look at the bridge. Please take a note though that it is not permitted to photograph/video bridges in Myanmar. Also keep in mind that trains in Myanmar are not up to international standard and reliability leaves to be desired. However, we will make every effort to provide best available seats on the train. In case of schedule irregularities, delays or unavailability of seats, the journey will be made by road as per original itinerary.


After breakfast, explore the local market by horse cart (if available). Continue overland to MANDALAY.
After lunch at a local restaurant in Mandalay you will experience the sights and sounds of Mandalay including one of the most revered religious monuments in Myanmar, the MAHAMUNI PAGODA; the SHWE INBIN MONASTERY; the GOLDEN PALACE MONASTERY, a superb example of a traditional wooden architecture and KUTHODAW PAGODA the world's largest book, made of marble. Visit a traditional hand-woven silk workshop as well as a Kalaga tapestry craftsmen's shop before proceeding to MANDALAY HILL for sunset.

After breakfast, excursion to AMARAPURA, 15 km from Mandalay to visit MAHAGANDAYON MONASTERY where more than a thousand monks live and study. Time permitting you will have the opportunity to observe the monks having their last meal of the day in total silence. Continue to 200-year-old U BEIN teak bridge, built in 1782 during the era when Amarapura was the Royal capital. Already from the early days the city was known for its silk- and cotton weaving. Visit a traditional hand-woven silk workshop before proceeding to BAGAYA MONASTERY, a compound with a superb collection of Buddha statues.
After lunch at a local restaurant, embark for a short boat ride over a river and start exploring the former Royal Capital INWA (AVA) by horse cart. Visit NANMYINT WATCH TOWER, the remains of the ancient palace building, also know as ※the leaning tower of Ava※; MAHA AUNGMYE BONZAN MONASTERY, built of brick and stucco; BARGAYAR MONASTERY, famous for its impressive ornate woodcarvings and teak posts then continue to SAGAING HILLS, a retreat for Buddhist devotees for sunset.

After early breakfast, transfer to the jetty and board a Chinese-built ferry boat for your journey on the AYAYARWADDY River to BAGAN. The trip takes approx. 8 hour downriver, depending on river conditions and water level. Lunch will be provided by Asian Tour. Upon arrival to Bagan, transfer to your hotel.

After breakfast, stroll through the colorful local market and continue the day with visits to the most significant pagodas and temples of Bagan including SHWEZIGON PAGODA, built by King Anawrahta in the early 11th century as a religious shrine; GU BYANUK GYI, and KHAY MIN GA TEMPLE noted for its panoramic view over the area's numerous monuments and ANANDA TEMPLE, with four standing Buddha images.
After lunch in a local restaurant, visit one of Myanmar's most treasured handicrafts, a lacquer ware craftsmen's workshop in nearby MYINKABA village. Continue to MANUHA TEMPLE, built in the Mon style in 1059 and follow on to NANBAYA TEMPLE, a unique sandstone monument which according to legends is the former palace site of King Manuha. Complete the day by a late afternoon ox-cart or horse-cart ride to one of the pagodas to watch the magical sunset over the famous Ayeyarwaddy River and countless pagodas.

After breakfast, transfer to Bagan airport for your domestic flight to YANGON. Upon arrival transfer to your hotel.
After lunch at a local restaurant complete your Myanmar impressions with an afternoon tour through Yangon's colonial-style city center. Visit SULE PAGODA, dating back over 2,000 years ago; the magnificent reclining Buddha CHAUK HTAT GYI; and after a photo stop at the KARAWEIK HALL, a 'hamsa-bird-shaped' floating barge on Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake, stroll through the BOGYOKE (SCOTTS) MARKET, a compound of hundreds of food, garment, handicraft and gem stores. Complete your first day in Myanmar with a visit to one of the world's most spectacular monuments, the SHWEDAGON PAGODA.
