Dali is located on a fertile plateau between the Cangshan Range to the west and Erhai lake to the east. It has traditionally been settled by the Bai and Yi minorities.Dali is the ancient capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao, which flourished in the area during the 8th and 9th centuries, and the Kingdom of Dali, which reigned from 937每1253.

Cangshan is a mountain range immediately west of Dali City.A paved walkway running north and south from the top chairlift station near ancient Dali passes several waterfalls, and overlooks lake Erhai and the ancient city itself.

Er Lake or Erhai Lake, Chinese Erhai, is an alpine fault lake. Its name means "Ear-shaped Sea", due to its shape as seen by locals and travellers. The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Highlights include Erhai Lake Park and the Butterfly Springs on the Western bank. Islands on the lake 每 including Guanyin Ge, Jinsuo Island , Nanzhao Folklore Island and Xiaoputuo Island 每 are also available for visits. The lake is an important food source for the local people (Bais), who are famous for their fishing method: their trained cormorants catch fish and return them to fishmongers. The birds are prevented from swallowing their fish by rings fixed around their neck.

The Three Pagodas are an ensemble of three independent pagoda towers arranged on the corners of an equilateral triangle, near the town of Dali, Yunnan province, China, dating from the time of the Kingdom of Nanzhao and Kingdom of Dali in the 9th and 10th centuries. The Three Pagodas are located about 1.5 km  north of scenic Dali, Yunnan province. They are at the east foot of the tenth peak of the massive Cangshan Mountains and face the west shore of the Erhai Lake of the ancient Dali town. The Three Pagodas are well known for their resilience; they have endured several man-made and natural catastrophes over more than one thousand years. Their mother building was known as Chong Shen Monastery  and was once the royal temple of the Kingdom of Dali.
