Honghe Hani Rice Terraces is the terrace located in the Honghe Prefecture, Yuanyang County, Yunnan, China. The terraces has 1,200 years of history. The distribution has four counties: Yuanyang, Honghe, Jinpin and Lvchun. The core area of the Rice Terraces is located in the Yuanyang County. The area has 1,000,000 acres.

On the south banks of the Honghe River in the mountainous terrain of Yunnan province, the Honghe Hani Rice terraces cascade down the towering slopes of the Ailao mountains. Carved out of dense forest over the past 1,300 years by the Hani people who migrated here from further north-west, the irrigated terraces support paddy fields overlooking narrow valleys. In some places there are as many as 3,000 terraces between the lower edges of the forest and the valley floor.

Responding to the difficulties and opportunities of their environment of high mountains, narrow valleys crisscrossed by ravines, extremely high rainfall and the sub-tropical valley climate, the Hani people have created an extraordinarily complex system of irrigated rice terraces that flows around the contours of the mountains from a dense forest environment.

Over the past 1,300 years, the Hani people have created the amazing landscape of rice terraces with their wisdom and hard work. It is the perfect blend of agrarian culture and natural landscape. The creativity of the Hani people has not only transformed the area into a fertile area for growing rice but also a place of artistic beauty. The Hani rice terraces are not just a place of natural splendor but also the most harmonious masterpiece by man and nature.

As a cultural landscape property, the Honghe Hani Rice terraces are actually comprised of the forest at the hilltop, the stockaded villages below the forest, the terraced fields below the villages and the Honghe water system below the terraced fields.

The landscape reflects an integrated four-fold system of forests, water supply, terraces and houses. Forest vegetation atop mountains collects rainwater; and clefts in the rocks channel the rain; sandstone beneath the granite mountains traps the water and then later releases it as springs carries it into rivers.

A complex system of channels has been developed to spread this water around the terraces in and between different valleys. Four trunk canals and 392 branch ditches which total 445 kilometers in length are communally maintained.

At the bottom of the valleys, water evaporates into the upper atmosphere, cooling and again dropping onto the mountain as rain, which forms an ecological cycle.

Making use of the water resources conserved by the forest on the hilltops, the terraced fields on the hillsides have formed vast artificial everglades while producing rice and aquatic animals. Plants co-exist with these water-filled paddy fields to meet the basic needs of hundreds of thousands of Hani people and other ethnic groups.

From late April to late September, the Hani people grow red rice, the terrace's dominant crop. Cattle and buffalo plow the terraces, and no chemical fertilizers are used. Fish and ducks are also bred in the paddies, which improves fertility while providing food for people and animals.
