Amne Machin (or Anye Machin,Maqen Gangri, Animaqing Shan£© is the highest peak

of a mountain range named Amne in the province of Qinghai in west-central China.

 

Amne Machin
Amne Machin, or Amnye Machen, reaching up to 6282 meters, is one of the four greatest

sacred mountains in Tibetan region. As prat of the Kunlun Mountain Ranges, Amne Machin is

located in Golog Prefecture in Qinghai, home to many of the Amdo Tibetans. Amne Machin is

Tibetan, in which Amne or Amnye means "great ancestor" and Machin or Machen means "the

giant mountain at the origin of Machu(Yellow River in China)".


Among the Amne Machin Mountain Ranges, the highest is composed by three major peaks, one

6254 meters, one 6127 meters and the highest peak soaring 6282 meters. There are total 18

mountains reaches over 5000 meters in Amne Machin. The highest 13 peaks have an average

elevation of 5900 meters. Amne Machin Mountain Range lies southeast to northwest, with

total massif 28 km's long and 10 km's wide. The water it provides is one of the major

sources of Machu. Amne Machin is also a sactuary of glaciers. Some 40 glaciers marching

downhill bit by bit over thousands of years. The biggest Halong Glacier is at its north

face. Plains around Amne Machin are beautiful lands of lakes, streams, wild animals and

herbal medicines.


Amne Machin is one of the nine original gods of the world. It is the protector of Amdo and

considered by local Tibetans the shrine of Avalokitesvara and the five hundreds arhat. In

the Epic of King Gesar, Amne Machin the god is believed to be the God of War and the

mountain was home to the King Gesar. God of Amne Machin, the reincarnation of wisdom and

greatness, is depicted usually in white armor, riding on white horse and with a silver

spear, protecting people from evil beings.


The pious Tibetan Buddhists hold strong belief in the god of Amne Machin. When there is

misfortunes and disasters, they will call on Amne Machin to come to their aid. During

festival season, people serve sacrifice and light aromatic plants to consecrate gods,

called Weisang. Every 12 years in Amdo in the year of Goat, Buddhists pack up to have a

circumambulation around the Amne Machin, it is called the Kora.

 


Ancient Town of Guidhe
Guide or Guide, is a small town in Hainan Prefecture of Qinghai Province in north China.

The old town, a small enclosure in the middle of the Guidhe Town, was first built over 600

years ago in 1380AD in Ming Dynasty. In ancient times, Guidhe was on both the "Silk Road"

and the "Tango Ancient Road", which made the town with thorough roads and wide streets.

This town was relatively well preserved: constructions within the wall of ancient town are

actually from Ming Dynasty and some had been renovated in Qing Dynasty.


A Confucius Temple is at the east of the ancient town and beside it is a Guanyue Temple, or

Mazu Temple, shrine of General Guanyu, General Yuefei and Mazu. (in China, Guanyu was a

general lived around 220AD and Yuefei is another general from Song Dynasty in 1130AD, both

of them are considerd widely as the incarnationa of loyaty in Chinese tradition; Mazu is a

great Buddhist from Tang Dysnasty). Another temple is called Wanshou, shrine of the Jade

Emperor (Supreme Deity of Taoism). At the west of the ancient town are landmark of Guidhe

the 28 meters Yuhuang pagoda and lots of carcing, paiting and fresco.

 


Ragya Monastery
Ragya Monastery is located 50km northeast to the town of Maqen in a small town named Ragya.

It is also named Jiaxiangsi, a Gelugpa monastery. It used to be a big monastery but was

destroyed by red guard during the Culture Revolution. Today, some 500 monks live in the

monastery.

 


Ta'er Monastery
Ta'er Monastery, or more widely known as Kumbum Monastery, is located 25km south of Xining

of Qinghai. It is one of the six most important Gelugpa Monasteries in Tibetan Buddhism and

the biggest monastery in Qinghai. It is the hometown of Tsongkhapa, the master of Tibetan

Buddhism 600 years ago. Kumbum Monastery is over 600 years old and it was just a set of

stupas at first and then the complex became bigger and bigger. Today it has some dozens of

temples.


Monastery is the center of Tibetan Culture. The Kumbum Monastery is the school of

Vajrayana, traditional astronomy and medication. Kumbum Monastery has collections of

beautiful Tibetan frescos, paintings and the unique Tibetan barbola(thangka, silk and

fabrics embroidered together and decorated with wool or cotton, usually made into the image

of Buddha or Buddhism-related themes). At the 4th and 6th month in the Lunar Calendar,

people will hang the Thangka in Kumbum Monastery in celebration of the birth of Sakyamuni.

Day 01:Xining - Guidhe
Ride from Xining to Guidhe, en route visit the 600 years' old Kumbum Monastery(Ta'er si),

one of the six most important Gelugpa Monasteries in Tibetan Buddhism and the biggest

monastery in Qinghai. It is the hometown of Tsongkhapa, the master of Tibetan Buddhism 600

years ago. Continue Riding to Guidhe and visit the well-preserved Guidhe old town, a small

enclosure in the middle of the Guidhe Town, was first built over 600 years ago in 1380AD in

Ming Dynasty. In ancient times, Guidhe was on both the "Silk Road" and the "Tango Ancient

Road".

Day 02:Guidhe - Maqen(Dawu)
Another day of riding from Guidhe to Maqen(Dawu), en route visit the Ragya Monastery. It is

also named Jiaxiangsi, a Gelugpa monastery. It used to be a big monastery but was destroyed

by red guard during the Culture Revolution. Today, some 500 monks live in the monastery.

Arrive in the Amdo Tibetan town of Maqen in the afternoon.

Day 03:Maqen - Tsegonka(Caigongka)
Walk the streetsof Maqen and feel the Tibetan life. After a last minute shopping we

transfer to Tsegonka, our trekking start point. Get the first glimpse of Mt. Amne Machin

from east. Meet our porter team and acclimatize for the altitude. Overnight camping.

Day 04:Tsegonka - Yangke
First day on trekking. We head southwest in the river gorge where the earth is green since

spring time. Altitude reaches 4000 meters and sun becomes a bit scorching in a sunny day.

While walking beside the river side, we may encounter groups of Tibetan pilgrims on their

circumambulation journey, practicing their beliefs. Reach campsite near Yangke and camp

overnight. (Approx 4h)

Day 05:Yangke - Tzerang
Continue our trekking after breakfast along the river. Snow-capped mountains start to

appear when trail dissolving into alluvial sands and rocks from Amne Machin massif from the

east. Vast highland views over the high spot where prayer flags dancing in the wind. Camp

near Tzerang in the afternoon. (Approx 5h)

Day 06:Tzerang - Kumao(Gumao)
Wake up in the chilly morning at Tzerang and watch the sunrise if weather permits. After

breakfast we walk into the vast alluvial earth and see the panoramic spectacle of Amne

Machin. White cap stretching under the bluish shy in the distance, everything looks smaller

here. In between prepare for river-crossing before we get to Kumao. Camp on flat meadow.

Day 07:Kumao - Chadhe
Start early in the morning to avoid the track being submerged by melted water from Amne

Machin glacier. Spectacular alpine views all the way including snow mountains, pasturing

animals and old glaciers. Walk northwest on the track and camp in Chadhe. Great Amne Machin

views when looking back. (Approx 7h)

Day 08:Chadhe - Wenquan
Last day on Amen Machin trekking, walk to Xiadawu and arrive at noon. Optional visit to the

splendid newly-built Buddhist monastery. Farewell our porter team and the holy mountain

Amne Machin. Transfer to Wenquan for a hostel overnight. Optional hot spring bath after

dinner. (Approx 4h)

Day 09:Wenqun - Kokonor Lake
Ride to Qinghai Lake(Lake Kokonor), the biggest lake in China, home to migrant birds and

many kinds of fishes. Kokonor is Mogolian meaning bluish green sea. The name of Qinghai is

from this lake. The lake is at the altitude of 3200 meters with 4000+ and 5000+ high

mountains setting around. In summer and autumn, the lake is green and blooming with

pasturing animals on vast grassland. Overnight near the lake.

Day 10: Kokonor - Xining Departure
Wake up in the early morning to take pictures of the beautiful Lake Kokonor. Transfer back

to Xining. Our Amne Machin Trekking trip ends.
