The Taklamakan Desert has an area of 337,000 km2, and includes the Tarim Basin, which is 1,000 kilometres long and 400 kilometreswide. It is crossed at its northern and at its southern edge by two branches of the Silk Road as travelers sought to avoid the arid wasteland. Day 3: Keriya to Darya Boyi (Daheyan)

Full day driving to Darya Boyi village which is about 220km from Keriya town into the Taklimakan desert. It takes about 10 hours by SUV through giant sand dunes to get to this ancient and isolated village. Tonight we spend the night with a local nomadic family. Darya Boyi village is also called "Tongus Basty village" by local people. "Darya boyi" means bank of the river, as this village is located by the side of the Keriya river. The village was isolated from other towns for thousand years and the people here have maintained a unique and rich desert culture which hasn't yet been spoiled. Nobody knew people lived here until recently when the village was accidently discovered by a petroleum expedition group.

Overnight:Local Family

Day 4 to Day 10: Desert Expedition Trekking

After breakfast with a Nomadic family, we'll prepare for a challenging and adventurous journey into the sand void ahead. Check: One experienced English speaking tour guide, one local cook and several friendly camel drivers (depends on group size). All will travel together with you through the desert, becoming close family members as you share some tough yet unforgettable, experiences at the heart of the Taklimakan. Each day we'll hike 5-6 hours through the surrounding dunes at one with the pulse of the desert: its at once overwhelming vastness and microbial existance laid at your feet. Each night we'll spend surrounded by a sea of sand dunes starkly etched through the light of the Milky Way arcing overhead. As the sun begins to slip west at the end of long day by camelback, we'll set up camp for an evening under the stars. We'll sit, laugh, listen to the life stories of our camel man or sing and dance around the camp fire to a traditional music. Every night you'll see the clear, unspoilt sky overheard, smell the sweet, cool night air and hear nothing but the silence of the desert to lull you to sleep. Every morning, we'll wake to a splendid sunrise lighting up the day as a vast wave of light over the dunes. Breakfast will be served as bread, butter, jam, cheese and tea, before we head out into the dunes once again. There are few places on earth where one can truly get away from it all. This is an experience not to missed

Overnight: Camping

Day 10: Back Hotan

During our last day of trekking, we'll arrive at Mazar Tagh, a colorful mountain located on the banks of the Hotan River. Locals also call it "Kizil Tagh," which means "red mountain," or "Ak Tagh" which means "white mountain" as it looks red on the top and white on the base. Mazar Tagh means "tomb mountain" as a 1500 years old tomb castle is located on the top of it. You'll certainly enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Taghraklik (the forest of the desert poplar) on both sides of Hotan river as we enter the village, before driving back to Hotan and checking into your hotel. A welcome shower is always nice to get rid of the sand and dirt from a week of desert trekking. Yet the great experiences, wonderful memories and spectacular views of the desert will be kept in your mind forever

Overnight: Hotan

Day 11: Hotan Dparture
